more stuff i don't get

Continuing my previous post, I now submit yet even more things I don't get. Keep in mind, this is from my life... not from some Comedy Central special or forwarded e-mail.
  • Why ABC Family played "Risky Business" last month. If I recall that movie's content from back in the day, I'd think it to be an odd choice for a station with "family" in the title (even though "ABC" comes before it).
  • Why when I get stopped at the train tracks it's not by a train going by fast, but by one that has chosen to stop on the tracks. Please explain to me why they do this there (versus on a spot that doesn't affect traffic). To top it off, most of the time they back up... like, "Oops - sorry! Shouldn't have taken that left at Albuquerque."
  • Why the past few times I've gone to the post office to mail something in a padded envelope the guy or gal behind the counter asks, "Is there anything fragile in here?"
  • Why people in front of me ordering something in the drive-thru think that if they use their hands and point to the menu when talking to the little speaker it will help the guy on the other end know what they are pointing at.
  • Why the Amazing Race switched to an hour later without giving any reason.
  • Why the cast of Lost not only gets an insane amount of money but they get to hang out in Hawaii to shoot the show... and I've never even been to Hawaii (unless you count the number of times I watched the Brady Bunch episodes where they visit the islands and hang out with Vincent Price).
  • Why someone hasn't published a guidebook to the restaurants in town that do free things for your birthday.
  • Why I would pay money for a guidebook that would help me find free things.

That train thing is one of my biggest frustrations! I was just talking the other day with a friend about ABC Family and some of the movies they choose to air - like the Cruel Intentions movie for one! I hate to dog them too much because I watch them every day at 6:00 PM Central for Smallville... but still...

I have been known - before the age of security cameras - to mess with the Drive-Thru people - and customers for that matter. I'll tape a sign on the menu that says - mic not working well - PLEASE SPEAK LOUDLY. Then, go inside, order a meal and sit down near the counter and just wait for the entertainment to begin. Then, one time we decided to do something a little different - and we put on there that we were sorry we were out of hamburgers today. So, either everyone was ordering chicken (also in the days before salads appeared on fast-food menus) - and then you'd hear the employees wondering why everyone was ordering chicken. No customer even thought to verify that they were still out of hamburgers. We went back that night and found our sign still there - and the manager inside ordering the new shift that they were having a run on chicken and about to run out of chicken! When I heard him talk about putting a sign outside that they were out of chicken, I went and removed the sign we'd put out there.

Your comment vis-a-vis LOST reminded me of Jon Stewart's comment after George Clooney won an Oscar: "How much more can he HAVE???"

Thanks for sharing your confusion. Makes me feel better about mine.

Melanie... thanks for those crazy fast food ideas. I'll happily pass them along to my youth worker friends.

Brian... come on, bro. That's a Mikey's Funny. I want to hear an original Brian musing.

Thurman8er... wasn't it cool when Clooney came out to present (after his win) and was labeled, "Oscar winning actor George Clooney?"

Stephanie... Elkhart? Yikes... how cold is it today in the flatlands?

Oh man, I've made numerous comments to my wife about the content on ABC Family ... sometimes its MORE than nasty. I remember seeing one show that was all about one-night stands.

I'm not usually weird about that stuff, but when they SAY it's a family channel...

I don't get why people talk to inanimate objects even though I find myself guilty of this too. It's not like it's going to talk back to you. But maybe that's the point...
